Ruby Baby!
July is the month for Ruby!
I couldn’t help but listen to the song, Ruby Baby, by the Drifters as I wrote this post . You can listen to it here while you read.
In Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, Ruby is Ratnaraj and means “the King of Gems.” It is the king for many reasons.
Color is the most significant factor affecting a Ruby’s value. The finest Ruby will display a pure, vibrant red to slightly purplish red color. In most markets, pure red colors command the highest prices, and Rubies with overtones of orange and purple are less valued. Sometimes a pink Puby can be mistaken for a pink sapphire, which has a higher value. However, for the buyer, the most desirable color of Ruby is the one you like the most.
Inclusion-free Rubies are practically nonexistent. However, the Ruby value can depend on how visible the inclusions are. Typical Ruby clarity characteristics include thin mineral inclusions called needles.
As you may suspect, fine-quality Rubies over one carat are scarce. But good commercial-quality Rubies are commonly available in a wide range of sizes, and the price per carat goes up significantly for Ruby as the size increases.
As the king of gemstones, Rubies often command the highest per-carat price of any colored stone. The per-carat prices of fine-quality Rubies have been rising consistently, often breaking auction records. On May 12, 2015, a 25.50-carat Ruby ring sold for $32.4 Million. That is $1,266,901 per carat! It set a new record at auction for a colored gemstone.
At Gems of Jaipur, all the gems in our jewelry (and those in the My Precious Gems collection) are real and not lab-created. Our Rubies are good to very good quality and will make an excellent gift for the July Birthday…or any time!
