What is Luxury Jewelry?

Luxury is defined as something not essential but is expensive, desirable, or valuable and provides comfort. Luxury is a subjective term used to describe jewelry of the highest level of quality.

There are two kinds of jewelry in the fashion and accessory world: fashion jewelry and luxury jewelry. But, what makes jewelry luxury?

Knowing the difference between fashion jewelry and fine jewelry is simple—it is all based on the jewelry’s materials.

So, let’s define our terms.

Fashion jewelry is also known as costume jewelry. This is jewelry made with base metals and simulated (not genuine) stones. These jewelry pieces are often made with brass, copper, or aluminum, which tarnish easily. Fashion jewelry is also made entirely from textiles, leather, or other base metal alloys. Simulated stones are used to make these pieces, including plastic stones, glass stones, cubic zirconia, and Swarovski crystals (Yes, really!) You find this jewelry in clothing stores, even up-scaled stores, or accessories stores.

Fashion jewelry breaks, cracks, and tarnishes quickly, leaving it without much of a shelf life. When these metals become tarnished, it isn’t easy to clean them to their original color. They are nearly impossible to fix once they have broken. The level of heat it takes to solder the brass or copper piece back together would burn the metal, leaving it permanently black or melting the piece altogether. Luckily, since fashion jewelry is cheaper, it can easily be replaced entirely.

Fine or Luxury jewelry is the term used to describe jewelry made of solid gold, sterling silver, platinum, or other precious metals. This kind of jewelry often uses genuine precious gemstones like diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, etc. Because it is made of solid precious metals and gemstones, luxury jewelry is so much stronger than fashion jewelry and will not tarnish with proper care and storage. In addition, when broken, luxury jewelry can be repaired.

So, as we have seen, the materials that make up the jewelry decide whether a piece is considered fashion jewelry or fine, luxury jewelry.

Yes, luxury jewelry comes at an elevated price point, but in truth, the value and longevity of these pieces are well worth the investment. Maybe consider saving all the money spent on fashion jewelry (and some of those come at a high price tag) and buy yourself or your special person a luxury piece that will last a lifetime!

Something to consider!
