About to Go Back Jewelry, Some Textiles, and The Black Star of India

I am preparing for my return to India—always a season of discovery. There is shopping to be done, gemstones to uncover, and jewelry to bring back for you. Each trip holds something special, and this time, my heart is especially drawn to the Black Star of India.

This is not a “precious” gem in the sense of diamonds, emeralds, or sapphires. It isn’t rare because of its price tag—but because of its beauty and meaning. The Black Star of India is a variety of black star diopside, a gemstone that forms with a natural phenomenon called asterism. When light hits its surface, you see a luminous four-rayed star gliding across the stone—like light cutting through darkness. Unlike the more well-known star sapphires, which usually show six rays, the Black Star of India glows with a distinct four-pointed star, sharp and captivating against its deep black body.

What makes this gem even more remarkable is that it is found only in India. This exclusive origin gives it not just rarity, but a deeper tie to the land and people we work alongside. In so many ways, the Black Star of India is a perfect reflection of the beauty and resilience we see in India itself.

I’ve already placed orders for the Black Star of India necklaces, crafted in sterling silver and in rose gold overlay, each finished with rhodium to protect against tarnish. I personally chose rose gold this time because it enhances the depth of the black in a way yellow gold cannot—adding warmth and contrast to the mysterious glow of the stone.

For me, this gemstone holds a special meaning. India is a land filled with vibrant color and life, yet also shadows of hardship. And still—like the star in this stone—there is a LIGHT that cannot be hidden. I see it in the children we teach and in the families we serve. With every purchase you make, you are helping provide nutritious meals and education for them, equipping them to be LIGHT in their own communities.

I invite you to journey with me. Follow along on our social media channels as we share glimpses of India: the jewelry being made, the textiles being woven, and the treasures waiting to be discovered. And when these Black Star of India necklaces arrive, I can’t wait to hear what you think.

Because sometimes, the most meaningful gems are the ones that remind us—LIGHT always shines in the darkness.
